Apron Evangelism

Thanks to the Hillbilly Housewife for this lovely article.  I couldn't agree more with her.  I love my aprons even though my friends laugh at me.  :)  Thanks Maggie for your words of encouragement!
One day not too long ago I was struggling with the boys over some minor details which come up when a lot of people live in a small shack in the woods. Details like the value of picking one’s dirty clothes up off of the living room floor when company has been spotted driving up the mountain. The boys were unusually stubborn that particular day. Rather than fight with them over their household responsibilities I picked up the dirty clothes myself and crammed them into the washing machine. I ran some soapy water in the sink to get a start on the dishes before the company arrived.
Now usually I am not one to hold a grudge over small disagreements like laundry on the living room floor. This one settled in my brain though, and I felt compelled to mull over it for several days. It was the outright insubordination which offended me the most. After I figured that out I went in search of solutions.
About the same time I was in the process of Spring Cleaning. I was having a great deal of trouble motivating myself to wash the walls in the kitchen and mop the back porch where the cats live (blessedly with a doggie door so they don’t need litter boxes).
Well, the more I worried about these twin dilemmas the more I felt the need to discuss them with the queen of solutions, my momma Darthulia. As I suspected she had the perfect solution. Darthulia told me I needed a uniform or costume which would reassure myself and others of my intention and status in the home. She claimed it would remind me of my duties, inspire me to greater levels of cleanliness (which as a hillbilly I sorely need), and reaffirm my authority in the home.
Darthulia then went on to describe the homemaker’s uniform to me in detail. “Imagine the modern archetype of the housewife.” She began. “Think Donna Reed, or Beaver Cleaver’s mom. They wore full skirts, and stockings, and heels when they vacuumed. But you knew they were doing housework because they had their aprons on. A string of beads graced the necks of their classic shirtwaist dresses, and a lacy bibbed apron proclaimed their role as matriarch in charge of household management.”
I only have a fleeting memory of Donna Reed. I sort of wish she came on television regularly so I could take notes but she doesn’t in my area so I am stuck looking for other heroines-of-the-home to model myself after. Most of what momma said made sense to me though. That very day, I put on a full skirt, stockings, sensibly low high heeled shoes, and a string of pearly white beads. Then I sat down at my sewing machine and ran up a couple of bibbed aprons, decorated with lace and ribbons.
I made up the pattern as I went along using a small rectangle for the first bib and a heart shape for the second bib. Then I stitched lace around the edges of the bib and attatched it to a simple tie with a full apron skirt gathered to the waist. I made them short waisted so they would fit my maternal figure a bit better, and voila, I was set. I put the first apron on, a creamy white or ecru, and looked in the mirror to admire my handiwork. I expected to see myself staring back at me, probably looking a little silly in this frilly piece of confection designed to protect my clothing.
Boy howdy, was I in for a surprise. In the mirror I saw a vision of the homemaker I have always strived to become staring back at me. Her cheery face glistened in the sunshine. Her hair tied up neatly in bun looked authoritative, and compassionate all at the same time. The apron covered several figure flaws and accentuated the fertile curves of the woman I saw in the mirror. This woman had purpose. She had status. She had clout. I stood there, contemplating the wonder of the homemaker that shone through my image in the mirror. “This is who I want to be” I told myself. “This is the Keeper of the home, with a capital ‘K’. ”
I wear my aprons every day now. I have made more, in different colors and configurations so as to be pleasing to my senses. I have come to believe they are a like lacy bits of lingerie, only worn on the outside, and a quite a bit more respectable. When I put on my aprons the children mind me better, wandering visitors immediately know my role as a stay at home mom. Door to door religious missionaries assume I am a virtuous woman and cheerfully move on to the next house. Fred thinks I look cute as a button, and neighbor children hug me more often.
I like my aprons. They have changed my life, raising my standards, inspiring me to greater feats of home making skill, and making me more effective as a parent. Whoever thought that a dollars worth of fabric and lace could effect so many changes on one woman and one family? Since my success with aprons I have become a true believer. I am now called to spread the word among my fellow housewives. Join the crusade by sharing your love of aprons with friends, family and internet buddies around the world. Together we will change the face of the House Wife, the world over.
Blessings,
–Maggie (The original Hillbilly Housewife)

How To Peel an Egg Without Destroying It!! MUST SEE

Since it's almost Easter and many of us are going to be hard boiling eggs, I thought I would share this link with you.  I don't know what it is about hard boiled eggs but they never peel right.  They always end up making my deviled eggs look like some foreign object that no one wants to eat.  They're good, but they look horrible.

Tim Ferriss to the rescue:

Good luck!  I will be trying it this weekend!!

Becoming a COUPON DIVA - Part 4 in a Series

Anyone can be a coupon diva BUT I will warn you that it takes a good amount of time on your part. You are not going to be able to shave 25% or even 50% off of your grocery bill if you view take it nonchalantly. You have to invest time into couponing and the rewards will pay off every time you go to the store and come home having spent significantly less.

I have tried many time in the past to become the coupon diva that I see others being but it just seems too complicated. I am going to make it work this time though. It’s not hard, it is just a commitment. To me it’s worth it because I truly HATE going grocery shopping and spending most if not all of the money I have budgeted only to need more groceries before my next check arrives. I am literally sick to my stomach every time I leave Wal-Mart now just because I am amazed at the amount I spend there on groceries that in one week will be GONE.

Here are some statistics for you:

  • If you invest 2-5 hours per week you can look to shave 15-25% off your entire year’s grocery bill.
  • If you invest 5-10 hours per week you can look to shave 50-75% off your entire year’s grocery bill.
  • If you invest 30-40 hours per week you can look to shave 90% off your ENTIRE year’s grocery bill.

If you’re like me, I can’t spend 30-40 hours per week on my couponing. I will considering invesing 5-10 hours of my time though. This time spent includes looking for coupons, traveling to the stores, actually grocery shopping and creating menus. If you really think about that then 5-10 hours can add up pretty quick.
First things first.  You need to check your stores policies and guidelines regarding coupons. When do they offer Doubles, Super Doubles, Triples? These are they day that you want to shop with your coupons. A lot of companies don’t advertise these dates but if you ask they will tell.

Here are all the ways that you can get coupons:
  • Circulars - this is the Sunday paper. Buy more than one – it is a great way to get lots of coupons for a small investment. Red Plum and Smart Source are the two major circular coupon companies.
  • IP – Internet printables, this is becoming a very easy way to get coupons. Sign up with a few sites and they will send you coupons all of the time. It’s a great thing!
  • Catalina’s – these are the coupons that print out at the register when you get your receipt. These are GREAT simply because they are usually for an item that you bought therefore more than likely will buy it again.
  • Blinkies – these are found in the stores next to the item it is for, you know the ones that all the kids like to take coupons from (or is that just my kids)
  • Tear pad – found on little pads near the product.
  • Peelie – these are found on the products themselves such as Grands biscuits.
  • Wine tag – these are found on the bottle neck of a bottle and are mostly in the soda pop section which is a section I am TRYING to avoid.
  • Rebate – this is a coupon that you mail in and receive money back. (Your hours per week spent couponing should also include filling out rebates. The woman saving 90% of her grocery bill will be using these to their fullest potential.) Don’t ever throw rebates away!
  • Ask family and friends! There are a million coupons that get thrown away every year! Tell everyone you know that you will take any coupons that they don’t use. Pass them on when you sort through what you want.

Make sure that you have a loyalty card and that you use it for stores that you frequent. Also take advantage of stacking. That is using a store coupon such as one that can only be used at Target and stack it with a manufacturer coupon. TWO COUPONS on one item!

Your ultimate goal would be to use coupons on sale items ONLY. If you build your coupon stash and only buy when things are on sale, this is where you will see the biggest savings. You can typically use 3 coupons per item. I did not know that.

Here are some secrets!!
  • If the coupon says do not double at the top it WILL still double if the store you’re at doubles and it starts with a “5” in the barcode area. If it starts with a “9” it won’t double.
  • If ANYWHERE in the barcode there is an “8100” you can use this on ANY item. For example there are a lot of coupons for Cream of Mushroom Soup by Campbells. It says it is for Cream of Mushroom only, BUT if there is an “8100” in the barcode it will scan and be accepted.

These are legitimate ways to use coupons and you are not doing anything illegal by simply knowing how to use them.

There you have it!! Now get to working and scour the earth for coupons and USE THEM! Let me know how your next grocery trip goes.

MISSION: Budget Savvy Momma

I just sat down at the computer to do a bit of work but before I could do that I had to do some blog hopping and I have to tell you, I came across two of the most awesome sites known to woman!  That is if you like to save money.  I am a horrible financial manager in our household and although I have come a long way in recent years, I still have a looooooong way to go.  [hmmm.....I guess my spell checker doesn't think "long" should take that long to be spelled either.]

First off if you haven't learned about Dave Ramsey's Envelope system, then you must learn about it HERE.  Stupid me I took a Financial Peace class by Dave Ramsey and haven't implemented anything that I learned.  How stupid is that?!?  I'm not looking back anymore though....I am going to put this into practice NOW!  This is going to help me get organized and figure out where my money is REALLY going.

Now once you have that in place, check out Money Saving Mommy and The Krazy Coupon Lady for LOTS and LOTS of helpful tips, tutorials and articles on how to save money on just about everything.  While you're at it check out how Kelleigh does it all!!  It's amazing and I hope to be like these women someday.

I have used coupons in the past only to get frustrated with spending the time getting coupons for things that I don't ever use.  It is soooooo frustrating!  How do these women do it?  Hopefully I can come back in a month and let you know how they do it and also let you know that I am doing it too!  We'll see how it works out.

Take the challenge with me, will you?  I'm a little excited!!

What are some things that you do to help your budget stay under control?  Do you use the envelope system?  What are some things that you have figured out DO NOT work for you?

I couldn't be happier with the two aprons that I got for my birthday!  My mother and mother-in-law know me all to well!  I love them sooooo much!!  Thank you again!!  Call me crazy but I am so giddy with excitement :)  The first one is from Jessie Steele and the second is from Flirty Aprons.

It doesn't bother me one bit that some of my friends think my obsession with aprons is weird.  I love them and will keep adding to my collection!  YIPPEE!!!!

A Gentle Reminder

My Work

I have the greatest work in the world;
The job of rocking a baby to sleep,
That of guiding his tottering feet,
A baby's clothes to launder and fold,
A precious life to shape and mold,
A drink to give from a little cup,
At night his toys to gather up,
Hurts to heal and fears to quell,
A baby to keep clean and well,
A stack of diapers to put,
Oh, what a happy worthwhile day!
I am a "Mother."

I have the greatest work in to world;
A husband to encourage when things go wrong,
When he comes from work to greet with a song,
Denims and shirts to wash and mend,
A helping hand, when needed, to lend,
Three times a day is meals to cook,
To strive to be my best to look,
His back to rub at the close of the day,
For his faithfulness to God I pray,
When hubby's in the field I take lemonade,
for all these tasks his love has Paid.
I am a " Wife."

I have the greatest work in the world;
A home to keep happy, clean and bright,
Make things go smooth and strive for the right,
Jams to cook and jellies to make,
Cookies and pies and bread to bake,
Washing, ironing, and sewing to do,
So many tasks, will I ever get though?
Lettuce to wash and peas to pick,
floors to scrub, lost items to seek,
Dishes to wash and windows to shine,
These and many more tasks are mine.
I am a "Homemaker."

Help me, Father, to faithfully work,
Forgive if I unconsciously shirk,
give me the patience and love I pray,
To keep myself in duties way;
With all the hustle that each day brings
May I not neglect the needing things;
Each day to spend time alone with Thee
That Jesus Christ be seen in me.
Thank you for husband, our home, our girls and boys;
Thank you for love which brings me much joy.
Thank you , Lord.

Well Spent Money - Gone!!

I completed the daunting task of going through my entire cupboard and throwing everything out that was expired.  I was completely amazed at the amount of food that was out of date!  WOW...

It may not look like a lot but let me tell you if I had done this when my hubby was home he would not have been happy with the money that just went in the trash!!

My New Obsessions

I went on my normal Wal-Mart run this week and got all of the necessitities that were needed (along with some guilty pleasures).  One thing on my list was dish soap.  Now normally I have a brand that I tend to steer towards simply because I have used it for so long but I will use other brands if I have a coupon.  When it comes to dish soap I tend to buy Dawn for the most part.  Palmolive has entered our house on a few occassions but for whatever reason I usually buy Dawn.  Something new caught my eye this time and since it was "green" I decided buy.  It is absolutely AHHH-MAZING....

I bought the Water Lily scent and it "took me away".  I could have done dishes all day because the heavenly scent lasted forever!  I need those little get aways as much as I can and so I plan to purchase this FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE!!  Try it, see for yourself just how wonderful it is.

I feel so ecstatic because I found two AWESOME products this week.  I normally don't get on such a pedestal for anything but I just can't contain myself this week.  I have NEVER been able to clean my mirrors the way I wanted.  There is always a film that is left behind no matter what I have used from commercial to homemade products.  Nothing worked...until now!!

I found this Casabella Microfiber Glass Cleaner at Nebraska Furniture Mart and it was only $3 and it claims that you don't ever have to use any chemicals!  Hmmmm.....I figured it was worth a shot since I had tried almost everything else known to man.  IT WORKED BEAUTIFULLY!!  You can use it wet or dry and I choose wet simply because I thought it worked better.  I cleaned the one mirror in my home that REALLY needed attention (mostly due to the men in my house) and I skipped out of the bedroom and cleaned every other mirror I owned.  I will NEVER use anything else!

As James' preschooler taught him - Try it...You'll like it!  That's a promise I can keep.

The Comeback of the Apron!

I LOVE aprons!!
I have a weakness for them and I want to own several to match special occasions, holidays, seasons, etc.  Aprons seemed to be so much a thing of the past but they seem to making a comback in today's society.  I made my first apron a few years ago because I was tired of ruining my shirts while cooking, baking, and cleaning.  The original purpose of the apron is what inspired me but it has since evolved into another way to express myself.

I plan to expand my apron wardrobe in the next year so that I have an apron for everything.  I do tend to prefer the full body aprons simply beucase I am messy and I need something over my shirt.

Searching to the land of Blogosphere I have come across some absolutely amazing designs and creations for aprons.  I don't know where to start.  My original idea was to make another one of my own but there are just too MANY cute ones out there that I might just have to buy one from a fellow crafty blogger and help their addiction as well.

Here is a pic of an apron design that I absolutely love.  I love the coordinating colors also.  $30 just seems a little steep for my budget.

Maybe I can just leave some OBVIOUS hints to my husband since it is the holiday season.  If you are looking for apron inspiration you will not find a shortage on the web.  A great site to browse is http://www.girlyaprons.com/index.html

Save Your Sanity and Your Money

My greatest weakness is going to Walmart or Target "with a list" and coming home with a million other things that I never had any intention of buying.  I IMPLUSE shop to the greatest degree anyone could.  If my husband is with me he makes me stay to the list as best I can but I still HAVE to have one thing!  I don't know what it is but I always get more than I came for.  I am sure that a lot of people deal with this to some degree but it is a great weakness for me.  My husband could kill me sometimes because of it.

So I came across this site called http://www.alice.com/ and I think it is sooooo cool!  I joined - it was free by the way - and I stocked my shelves with stuff that I normally buy by the brands.  They had everything that I could need.  You can log in when you need your items and they will ship them to you AND it's free shipping.  So I am not spending any gas AND I am not buying anything extra hopefully.

You can set it up so that it reminds you when you might be running out of products so that you never run out.  You set up when you want to be reminded.  How much simpler can this get?

Check it out if you can and sign up.  We can save money and our marraiges together!  The less I go into a store the less money I will spend.

What are you eating?

Do you ever have days where you hear the dreaded question "What's for dinner?" only to remember that you don't really have anything planned so you throw something that isn't the healthiest meal you could have planned if you only took the time to do so.  Another option might be to just go out and grab something to satisfy your hunger because nothing was planned or you have a million other activites to do so there isn't time to cook dinner at home.  These nights are PERFECT for pulling the slow cooker out!  There are limitless recipes on the web anything you are looking for.  Whether you like making things from scratch or quick dinners; taking the time to do a little planning will save your sanity, checkbook, and the mindless nights of trying to figure out what you are going to do.

First and foremost you need to tailor your grocery list based on the weekly circulars.  This is where you will get the most bang for your buck.  Combining coupons with the circulars will put even more money in your pocket!!  Check out http://www.couponmom.com/ for tips and tricks on getting the most out of your shopping trips.

Here is a list of what I plan on making for the next couple of weeks.  I encourage you to take a look at what you're making too!  Post what your plans are to help other people get out of the rut of making the same old thing.

Potato Soup
Fish Tacos
Meatball Sandwiches
Creamy Chicken Casserole
Carbonara - this is Alysia's pick.
Chicken Quesadillas
Enchiladas
Bacon, Chicken, Tomato, Alfredo Pasta
Salisbury Steak - this is James' pick.
Talapia
BLT
Sauerkraut and Polish Sausage

What do you have planned for your upcoming menu?
